The Friends of the Village Library will host their programs for the 2011-12 season in the village office conference room at the lower level of 22 Main Street. The presentations will take place on Thursday evenings at 7pm except where noted otherwise. The speakers, dates, and topics are listed below. Please call Deb Dalton at 547-8199 for more information.
September 29th-A panel of students and teachers speak about their 2011 Outward Bound experiences. Participants include Susie Knight, Grace Livermore, and others.
October 13th-Michael Whaling, long-time resident of Sharon Springs, and Leila Durkin of Roseboom discuss their recent publication, The Garden Wall of Beekman Farm. Whaling, an artist, stonemason, carpenter, and environmentalist, created a stonewall for the famous Beekman Boys of Sharon Springs. His efforts, and Durkin's phenomenal photography, will be discussed and seen at this program.
November 13th [**PLEASE NOTE THIS IS A SUNDAY AFTERNOON AT 2PM IN THE VILLAGE LIBRARY**]-Chuck D'Imperio presents Great Graves of Upstate NY. Chuck is one of the longest tenured morning radio hosts in Upstate New York. He has been helming his top-rated morning radio program on WDOS in Oneonta since 1989. Also the title of one of his most popular books, this talk is a fascinating and humorous look at Chuck's journey around Upstate New York researching and visiting the final resting places of 70 American legends. Chuck's books will be available for sale following his presentation.
January 22th (2pm) - Bill and Barb Harman. Join the Harmans as they share a slideshow and stories of their three week journey to Alaska during the summer of 2011 kayaking in remote Glacier National Park, ice climbing on the glaciers and into crevasses, hiking in Denali National Park, with incredible views of Mt. McKinley and outstanding wildlife, fishing for, and catching, red and pink salmon with the grizzly bears. The Harmons also share the how-to's and what-to-do's for your own next adventure.
February 9th - Veronica Gil Seaver and others--Remembering Old Cooperstown. Remember the Smart Shop, Smalleys' Theater, Glimmerglass Restaurant? Come enjoy a walk down memory lane by locals who have lived here long enough to remember Cooperstown before it became a mecca for Little League teams.
March 8th - Rabbit Goody - Thistle Hill Weavers and Famous Films. For more than 20 years, Thistle Hill Weavers, the Studio of Rabbit Goody, located in nearby Cherry Valley, has been weaving luxurious custom fabrics, carpet, and trim for designers, homeowners, museums, and the film industry.
April 19th - Off the Beath Path. Have you ever considered swapping houses with a family from Paris? Or hking from inn to inn in Italy? A panel of local people will present highlights and how-to's from their wild wanderings, singular sightseeing, and terrific trips.
May 10th - The Reader's Journey with a Mystery Writer: Why I love to talk murder! Leslie Diehl, murder mystery author, grew up on a dairy farm in Illinois and earned a Ph.D. in psychology from the University of Georgia. Having worked in academia, she switched gears to become a writer. She now lives in Morris, NY, and will discuss her books which include A Deadly Draught, Dumpster Dying.
